- Print advertised in 'Mercure', April 1762. Part of a set of four plates representing mythological subjects and reproducing paintings by Luca Giordano (The rape of Europa, 1761; the Rape of the Sabines, 1762, the Judgement of Paris, c.1763, and Acis and Galatea, 1763). The plates were shown at the Salon, 1763, where they secured him a position as 'agréé'.
According to the announcement made in the Mercure for the publication of 'Acis et Galatée', the paintings belonged to a M.Colins, a painter living at Quai de la Mégisserie in Paris, and were for sale.
The BM keeps a complete edition of the set (1935,0520.42 to 45).
The Sabines is after a painting now in Genoa, acquired by Costantino Balbi in 1709 (Ferrari-Scavezzi A.273).
