Portrait of Sir John Burgh, half-length, in an oval lettered with the title, slightly turned to the left, with cropped hair and a small beard and moustache, in plate armour with scalloped pauldrons, a large lace-edged collar at his neck, a sash over his shoulder and his baton of command held in his hand across his chest, ornaments surrounding the frame including martial paraphernalia such as drums, weapons and armour as well as two hanging cornucopias from above with grotesque faces to the left and right, two Cupids supporting a coat of arms three fleur-de-lys with the motto 'Nec paruis sifto', a scroll beneath 1627/8

- In the second state this plate has the address of William Peake added, and was used as the frontispiece to Robert Mrakham, 'Description ... of Sir John Burgh', 1628 (STC 17403). In the third state the portrait was altered to Gustavus Adolphus.
