Rodin was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University on 25 June 1907. Bell, the Keeper of the Dept. of Fine Art in the Ashmolean, was in Paris during Rodin's visit, and wrote to apologise for missing him, while sending Rodin a cast of an antique terracotta that he had admired during his visit. Jon Whiteley guesses that the BM drawing was sent to Bell in return for this gift (see 'The Ashmolean' 46, Spring 2004, p.18).
