- Curator's comments
- From the water-colour by T.Girtin in the British Museum. The artist provides a note for Hardie, 1938-1940, Vol.2, p.17, stating, Nos. 172-175 "had to stand a lot of printing. I think the usual edition was about 2000. So they had to be strongly worked, and a good deal of the tone, supporting the lines in the etchings, was got by controlled 'foul biting'. This can be induced by using a thing and softish etching ground, and the tone given harmonises with the edtched lines."
