- This extensively hand-coloured lithograph is a proof of a print titled 'La mère de Mademoiselle ***' in the set 'Les Marionnettes de Paris et de Londres, Dessinées d'après Nature par Henry Monnier', published by Giraldon-Bovinet, in Paris and in London, in 1826. The set consists of six plates, printed variously by Motte, Noël or Bove, but only five of the plates are known, and only one is numbered (no.6). For more information, see 1930,0414.267.
This proof is bound with the set in a BM volume which includes five plates from the set (1930,0414.268 to 272) and the set's original paper covers (the front cover is also the titlepage). The plate titled 'La mère de Mademoiselle ***' has the Registration Number 1930,0414.268.
The proof appears to be printed on laid paper, and is trimmed to within the borderline; the type of paper is different from the wove paper in the published set. The proof was dedicated to an unknown individual by Monnier in 1873 and was later acquired by the collector Charles Malherbe who owned signed and coloured proofs by the artist.
