Jane Avril is in the foreground accompanied by the critic Edouard Dujardin. Yvette Guilbert, who can be recognized by her long black gloves, is singing on the stage. The Divan Japonais in the rue des Martyres was one of the less successful Parisian night spots. This poster was published in January 1893 but before July it had closed. Lautrec's posters were immediately acclaimed by the critics.
