- Curator's comments
- Advertised in 'Gazette de France', 19 January 1781, as the 'pendant véritable du Coucher de la Mariée' of 1770, by Moreau le jeune & J.B.Simonet after the gouache by Baudouin. In fact it was nothing of the kind and had been run up to suit it thematically, as a sort of 'before and after': see W.McAllister Johnson on 'Anomalous pendants in late XVIIIc. French prints', GBA December 2001, p.272. It competed with Ponce's engraving of Baudouin's L'Enlèvement Nocturne' which was equally unconnected with the 1770 plate, though at least it was after Baudouin.
The lettered state is not in the BM: for the lettering see Lawrence & Dighton.
