- Curator's comments
- Identified in the IFF as Charles de Bourbon, Cardinal de Bourbon (1523-1590) but the sitter's face resembles that of his nephew and namesake Charles de Bourbon (1562-1594), known as Cardinal de Vendôme until his uncle's death, when he became known as Cardinal de Bourbon instead.
For portrait of a young Cardinal de Vendôme see 2AA*,71.82
The quatrain allude to the Wars of Religion.
