- Curator's comments
- 1996 exh. label:
The drawing cannot be related securely to David's work on grounds of style; but it is manifestly in his spirit. The sitter has not been identified.
Recommended by Boucher to study with Joseph-Marie Vien, David won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and in Italy (1775-80) he transformed his art in emulation of the Antique, Raphael and Poussin. In 1785 he exhibited the "Oath of the Horatii", which secured his fame as France's leading painter. An ardent political revolutionary, he was forced into exile in Brussels at the Bourbon restoration in 1816, and remained there until his death.
