- Curator's comments
- BM has 24 of Göding's 59 illustrations for the first part of the Saxon History. On all 24 sheets armour is hand-coloured in gold and silver. Underneath each image c. 8-10 lines of letterpress text in German and divided into two columns, as well as two lines of Latin verse below.
Widukind is identified as an early 2nd century of the Saxons in the text acccompanying this sheet. As the Saxons only settled in Northern Germany in the 2nd to 4th centuries the dates mentioned on the sheet appear a little early. The name Widukind probably indicates the 8th century leader against the threat from the Franks under Charlemagne.
