- Derives from a portrait by Guérin (see for instance 1889,0603.228).
The plate comes from a group of prints which also includes a portrait of General Bernadotte (De Vinck 7017); all seem to show a portrait on a shield surrounded by trophies.
The plate was advertised in 'Journal typographique et bibliographique on 16 Prairial An VI (4 June 1798). It was altered in 1800, when Bonaparte became Consul, with the title becoming 'Buonaparte Consul de la République...'. The altered state is the one recorded in De Vinck.
