- Label from display of etchings by Victoria and Albert, July-September 2019 (Charlotte Gere): Prince Alfred, aged four, stands in a hilly landscape, wearing Highland dress of jacket, kilt, stockings and sporran. At Balmoral the princes wore woollen outdoor and velvet indoor jackets with Royal and Dress Stuart tartan kilts. While there on 11 September 1848, the Queen wrote in her Journal: “The Boys wore their Highland clothes, both in, & out of doors, & Affie looks charming”. This print is dated 6 January 1849; on 11 February she referred to “that sketch I have been making of Affie in his Highland dress”.
