Mignon’s four songs appear in Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship (1795-6). Mignon is a tomboy member of an acrobatic troop who is being maltreated, encountered by Wilhelm Meister when he travels with a touring theatrical group. Mignon’s songs, set to music by Schubert are played by a harpist-minstrel. Mignon becomes ill while Wilhelm is away, drawn into a secret society of nobles and intellectuals. After he returns, she dies.
