- Label from display of etchings by Victoria and Albert, July-September 2019 (Charlotte Gere): Waldmann arrived from Germany in June 1840, the first of several dachshunds called Waldmann or Waldina. Still uncommon in Britain, the Queen’s love of dachshunds (German hunting dogs or “badger-hounds”) made them popular as pets. In September 1840, she drew heads of Waldmann and Eos, the greyhound, and a little later made the studies of Waldmann in ink, pencil and watercolour that she used on 12 October for the etching.
The portrait of Waldmann is close to George Morley’s painting of the dachshund at the Windsor kennels, but in reverse (RCIN 404494).
