- Curator's comments
- This is one from a series of fourteen, for comment and another impression see 1873,0712.80.
This series by Suavius is bound in a volume with nine other series: Christ and the Apostles by Suavius (1925,1117.19-31), Christ and Apostles after Lombard (1925,1117.32-44), Sibyls (1925,1117.45-50) and Acts of the Apostles (1925,1117.51-68); a series depicting the story of Jacob by Cornelis Cort after Frans Floris (1925,1117.69-74); a series of portraits titled 'Virorum Doctorum' by Philip Galle (1925,1117.75-119); a series of portraits titled 'Pictorium Aliquot Celebrium' published by the widow of Hieronymus Cock (1925,1117.120-134); a series of Gods and Goddesses by Hans Collaert (1925,1117.144-149) and a series after the drawings of Michael Coxcie depicting the loves of Jupiter (1925,1117.150-159). For the whole volume see 157*.a.26 (1925,1117.19-159).
All these print series have been printed on paper bearing a watermark depicting a jug topped with flowers and showing the initials "PDB", which was used in France between 1583 and 1599 (Briquet 12793) and in England in 1607 (Heawood 3576). It is possible that this entire volume was printed by Volcxken Diercx, the widow of Hieronymus Cock, who continued printing in his workshop until she died in 1601.
