- Curator's comments
- Van Dyck made drawings of a number of his acquaintances and colleagues for inclusion in the Iconographie (for comment on which see inv. R,1b.47). This black chalk with grey and brown wash study depicts the Flemish painter and art dealer, Jan Wildens. The lines are indented for transfer, identifying it as the preparatory study for the portrait engraved by Paulus Pontius in the Iconographie (for impressions in the BM see 1848,1125.194 and 1868,0808.2601). A newly discovered drawing of Willem Hondius for the same series recently sold at Christie's New York (1 Feb 2024, lot 83).
