- Text from J.Rowlands, 'Drawings by German Artists and Artists from German-speaking regions of Europe in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum: the Fifteenth Century, and the Sixteenth Century by Artists born before 1530', London, BM Press, 1993, no. 50:
'Altdorfer has depicted the saint unusually from the rear, dramatising as well as heightening the forms with an exaggerated use of white bodycolour. Evidently 1512 was the year when Altdorfer achieved a highly original fluency of expression that followers attempted to emulate without much success. To appreciate the extent of his development at this time, one has but to compare this drawing with that of ‘St Christopher’ in Hamburg (Kunsthalle, inv. no. 22887; Winzinger, ‘Altdorfer’, pl. 22), which was done two years earlier.'
