The Fête de la Fédération was an enormous public celebration of the first anniversary of the fall of the Bastille which took place at the Champ de Mars, now the site of the Eiffel Tower, and in many provincial centres. The idea was for the National Guard from the new departments to take an oath of loyalty to 'la Nation, la Loi et le Roi'. This oath was sworn at an altar by Lafayette, presided over by Talleyrand, then Bishop of Autun. Contemporaries, including Helen Maria Williams ('Letters written in France, in the summer 1990', letter II), testify to the joyful atmosphere of the ceremony, for Madame de Staël it "was the climax of a great surge of national fervour" (Furet and Richet 1970, p. 109). In retrospect it was the last time that a real political balance seemed to have been achieved after the Revolution.
Federation was also a great opportunity for visual artists of all kinds and there was a great production of banners, fans and commemorative prints like the present one, which gives a panorama of the Champ de Mars at the moment of the oath, with the 'fédéres' lined up, and immense crowds watching the ceremony.
