- Curator's comments
- The is the first print in the bound volume of 'Il gran Teatro di Venezia, ovvero raccolta delle principali vedute e pitture che in essa si contengono', a collection of prints published in two parts: vol. I with 65 views of Venice (this album) and vol. II with 57 prints after paintings (see 1923,0417.31.1-57). The first edition was published by Domenico Lovisa in Venice around 1720. This edition is from the later 18th century when most of the plate numbers (some illegible, many backwards and out of order) were added.
This volume is bound in a mottled pattern binding, on the spine is the title 'Teatr di Venez'. On the inside cover is a bookplate featuring the crest of its former owner Thomas Philip Robinson, Earl de Grey. Then a title page followed by two pages of lettered key briefly describing the prints. The overall dimensions of the album are 550 x 730 mm (total width opened = 1460mm).
