- (Text from 'From Manet to Toulouse-Lautrec', BM 1978, cat.133)
This lithograph was commissioned from Lautrec by Ault and Wiborg, the American manufacturers of lithographic ink. This impression belongs to a small edition run off in Paris; the zinc plates were then shipped to America and the lettering added before the main edition was printed. The four original zinc plates are now in the Art Institute of Chicago. This is said to be the only lithograph that Lautrec made on zinc; zinc obviously ran fewer risks than stone on the trans-Atlantic crossing.
The models are Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran, Lautrec's cousin, and Emilienne d'Alençon.
