The Tietzes suggested that the border might be by Alessandro Vittoria. Rosand, after justly dismissing this idea, himself advanced an attribution to Antonio Vassilacchi (Aliense) on the grounds, at first sight not implausible but mainly literary and in the light of stylistic evidence quite unconvincing, that Aliense is referred to by Ridolfi as an imitator of Cambiaso and a collector of drawings, and that he is known to have collaborated with Palma Giovane on at least one occasion. Such resemblance as there is to Cambiaso is superficial, and comparison with the well-authenticated group of pen and wash drawings by Baglione shows conclusively that he is the author.
