- Curator's comments
- Partly based on sketches made during Farington's tour to the West Midlands in 1789. A sketchbook used on the tour is in the V&A (P80-1921). Another watercolour by Farington depicting the bridge from the opposite bank is reproduced in Spink-Leger, 'British paintings and watercolours of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries', 1997, p.35 (where erroneously ascribed to the BM collection). An oil painting based on this drawing was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1791. For a print by Ogborne after this drawing, see 1924,0201.9 and 1863,0725.73.
