Curator's comments
This is a reissue of the plates from Thomas Mortimer's 'British Plutarch', published by Edward Dilly, London, in 12 volumes in 1762. With the exception of the first page in the volume, which is printed from two juxtaposed plates, the portraits are etched and engraved three to a plate, making a total of 22 separate plates. Printed on wove paper watermarked 1791 and 1796. Blue paper wrapper is inscribed in pen on the front: "No. 78 (63 whole-length Portraits 4/)" Loose impressions of these prints are kept elsewhere in the collection.
