- Curator's comments
- See Sue Welsh Reed and Barbara Stern Shapiro, 'Edgar Degas, the painter as printmaker', Boston 1984, cat.51. It is generally accepted that the standing figure is Mary Cassatt, and the seated one her sister Lydia. This print is based on an earlier pastel in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Lemoisne ).
The print was intended for inclusion in the journal 'Le Jour et la Nuit' along with prints by Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt and others. The project was never realised. A previously unrecorded touched proof was sold at Sotheby's New York, 8.xi.2002/228. There is a related pencil drawing of a glass case of Etruscan sculptures in the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass. (1971.36; ex-collection of Marcel Guérin).
