- This bound album is a series of thirty lithographs extracted from the series 'Actualités', previously published in within the journal 'Le Charivari', in February and July 1859 (see L. Delteil, 'Le Peintre-graveur illustré', Vol. XXVII). Twenty-three of the lithographs are by Daumier; the rest by Vernier. All are 'sur blanc', which suggests that these impressions were printed between c. 1859-69. This copy is not bound in the sequence of the register numbers, which shows that the arrangement and binding followed after acquisition and stamping.
Apart from the prints by Vernier, each sheet bears the mark of a small red oval stamp containing the initials CLR; this specifies Charles Lambert Rutherston as the album's owner (Lugt 595). In this album, most of the pages have pencil marks rubbed out; these were the ower's pencil annotations describing the catalogue references, the date of original publication in 'Le Charivari' and the name of the album, when the sheets were loose, before being bound.
