- Curator's comments
- This drawing is numbered 561 in 'Chronological Description of Original Drawings and Sketches by the Old Masters formed by William Mayor' (London, 1875).
The drawing is related to Oudry's life-size painting of a famous Indian Rhinoceros 'Miss Clara' (now in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin) which was exhibited at the Salon in 1750, Opperman 1977, I, no. P349. The animal was toured around European cities in the mid-1700s by her Dutch owner, a sea captain, Douwe Mout, who had brought her from India, see G. Ridley, 'Clara's Grand Tour: Travels with a Rhinoceros in Eighteenth-century, Europe', London, 2004. Oudry sold his painting of the Rhinoceros and Lion in 1750 as part of a suite of 13 animal paintings. The buyer was Oudry's principal patron at the time, Christian Ludwig II, the German Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. After their purchase, the Duke shipped the paintings to his castle in northeast Germany - now a part of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. In the middle of the 19th century, the paintings were removed from their stretchers and placed in storage. A slightly earlier drawing by Johann Elias Ridinger of the same animal seen in Augsburg in 1748 is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, see P. Prange, A. Robison and H. Sieveking, in exhib. cat., Washington, NGA, 'German Master Drawings from the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection 1580-1900', no. 18
