Album quarter bound in vellum with fore-edge vellum strip and marbled boards, with a label on the front inscribed 'Studies & Sketches/by:/Richard Phelps/1730-75-84/Richard Phelps was a fellow/pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds/under Mr Hudson of Dunster', containing 72 leaves mounted with 312 drawings by Phelps (11 since removed), 2 by John Vanderbank (since removed), one by Alessio de Marchis, one by an 18thC Bolognese artist (possibly Cignani) and one as yet unattributed; includes drawings after Thomas Hudson and his circle (including Joseph van Haecken) and copies after Rembrandt and his circle; mainly portraits (also self-portraits), religious subjects, genre, grotesque figures, landscape studies, studies of Rembrandtesque figures, copies after other artists and miscellaneous subjects; portraits include Thomas Carew, Mrs Mary Carew, Thomas Popham, Mrs Binford, George Carew, John and Mrs Periam, Copplestone Warre Bampfylde, John Popham, Mrs Margaret Luttrell, Mrs Vere Tyndale, Miss Frances Bampfylde, Lady Elizabeth Dyke Acland, Mrs Elizabeth Bernard (Miss Carew), Mrs Anne Pleydell, Charles Jennens, Mrs Webber of Porlock, Mrs Frances Moggridge, Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (the 7th and also the 9th Bart), the Dyke Acland family, John Dyke Acland, Mrs Elizabeth Phelps, Miss Popham, Elenor Terril, the Revd Henry Lockett, Revd and Mrs Winpenny, Mr Clogg, Elizabeth Porter, John Gill, Henry Percy 9th Earl of Northumberland, Saskia van Uylenburgh, Jan Uytenbogaert, Palamedes Palamedesz, Benjamin Hallet, Sir Charles Kemeys Tynte, Prince Charles Edward Louis Philip Casimir, Vendramin (Giovanni, Filippo and Frederico), also female saints, Virgin and Child, Christ, St Andrew, St John, St Jerome, Abraham casting out Hagar, a monk, a chimney sweep, a view of Porlock, river views, a Polish Prince, a Jew, a fishing party, a shooting party and Commédia dell' Arte figures. 1740-1785

- The drawings are mainly on the recto, but some are on the verso or on both sides. There is an armorial ex-libris on the inside front cover with the arms of the Walter family of Devonshire.
The registation numbers of the drawings by artists other than Phelps are as follows: 1918-6-8-239 (Alessio de Marchis), 1918-6-8-167 (an XVIII c. Bolognese artist, possibly Cignani); 1918-6-8-127 (unattributed).
Two drawings have registration numbers with a suffix: 1918-6-8-142* and 1918-6-8-230*, and the album also includes a counterproof similarly numbered (1018-6-8-223*).
Eleven drawings by Phelps (1918-6-8-1,2,6,56,58,84,99,111,112,120,131) and two by John Vanderbank (1918-6-8-126,282) have been removed from the album and are now mounted separately.
The album appears to have been put together by Phelps's grandson, John Phelps, whose name is inscribed inside the back cover. See ECM typescript, and the Register for a complete list of the individual drawings.

- According to a note written at about the time of the Department's acquisition of the album and kept with it, 'all his own portfolios and those of his grandfather' were left by John Phelps to Richard Walter of Stoke-under-Ham, 'his only surviving though distant relative'. The album then passed by descent to Dr. Richard Hensleigh Walter who presented it to the Department in 1918. The note also gives information about the Phelps family. (ECM typescript).
