- The drawings are mainly on the recto, but some are on the verso or on both sides. There is an armorial ex-libris on the inside front cover with the arms of the Walter family of Devonshire.
The registation numbers of the drawings by artists other than Phelps are as follows: 1918-6-8-239 (Alessio de Marchis), 1918-6-8-167 (an XVIII c. Bolognese artist, possibly Cignani); 1918-6-8-127 (unattributed).
Two drawings have registration numbers with a suffix: 1918-6-8-142* and 1918-6-8-230*, and the album also includes a counterproof similarly numbered (1018-6-8-223*).
Eleven drawings by Phelps (1918-6-8-1,2,6,56,58,84,99,111,112,120,131) and two by John Vanderbank (1918-6-8-126,282) have been removed from the album and are now mounted separately.

- According to a note written at about the time of the Department's acquisition of the album and kept with it, 'all his own portfolios and those of his grandfather' were left by John Phelps to Richard Walter of Stoke-under-Ham, 'his only surviving though distant relative'. The album then passed by descent to Dr. Richard Hensleigh Walter who presented it to the Department in 1918. The note also gives information about the Phelps family. (ECM typescript).
