- Curator's comments
- This bound album is a series compiling thirty lithographs by Daumier, selected from the following series produced for 'Le Charivari': 'Actualités', 'En Chine', 'Croquis de Chasse', 'Ces bons Parisiens', and 'Emotions nautiques'. The original titles of these series have been removed in this album. The individual prints are annotated with publications dates, when they first appeared in 'Le Charivari'. The title-page is undated; it is likely that the album was published at a slightly later date to first publication of the lithographs. The prints are not numbered sequentially.
Following the title-page, each sheet bears the mark of a small red stamp containing the intitials CLR within an oval; this specifies Charles Lambert Rutherston as the album's owner (Lugt 595). A number is annotated in pencil throughout the album, in the margin of the image, below the collector's stamp; this could be a number referring to a sales catalogue or a rare catalogue on Daumier's works.
The two catalogues referred to, by Delteil, and Hazard & Delteil, at times list different states for the album. When both catalogues refer to the same states, this is noted in the bibliography; when they do not match, this is not specified. In all cases, the states contained in the album are all in a late state with the title of the original series removed.
