Description
The Martyrdom of St Andrew; St Andrew hung on the cross; the proconsul Egeas, on horseback at left, ordering the executioners to release him; below at right two men are unfastening his right leg, while a third on a ladder is freeing his right arm; a fourth man , lower down at left is loosening the rope round the Apostle's waist; two women at right looking at Egeas, one of them possibly Egea's wife Maximillia who was converted to Christianity by the Saint; some figures in lower left background watching the execution; above on the left three angels hovering with a crown of laurel and the martyr's palm; after Peter Paul Rubens.
