- This drawing is possibly related to Salmeggia's altarpiece, `The Marriage of the Virgin` (commissioned in 1598 and paid for in 1601), above the altar dedicated to St Joseph in the Duomo, Milan, a link shared by another, more sketchy drawing by Salmeggia in the BM, 1949,0709.7. Eric Pagliano firmly connects the two BM drawings and a black and white chalk study in Grenoble (MG D 1004; Pagliano 2010, no. 20) to the altarpiece, along with a black chalk study in the Ambrosiana, Milan (Pagliano fig. 20.4).
