- Curator's comments
- From an English edition of Beaumont's book ''Voyage Historique et Pittoresque du Comté de Nice'. The title-page imprint of the original French edition, according to Abbey, read: 'A Geneve, Chez Isac Bardin. De l'imprimerie de Bonnant, Imprimeur-Libraire. / M.DCC.LXXXVII'. That of the English edition was: 'London: Printed by John Nichols, for James Bate, Cornhill. MDCCXCII'.
Abbey notes that the plates were given French titles and publication line of Thomas Gowland: he suggests that they may have been obtained and prepared with the publication line before the translation of the text was ready, or even entirely prepared in Geneva. It is also possible that Gowland planned to published the plates independently of the text and of Nichols.
Abbey translates the titles from the French sheet detailing the plates, the 'Explication des Planches', listing the French titles which appear on the actual plates separately: hence he entitles no. 11, this plate, 'Port of Lympia and castle of St Alban'.
