- Part of a bound volume of 55 plates depicting Rome and Ancient Roman antiquities. See 1915,1211.2.1-55 for entire series.
Title page to a bound volume of 55 plates depicting views of Rome and studies of Ancient Roman antiquities published by Piale, Rome. See 1915,1211.2.1-55 for entire set. See also 1947,0319.6.1-49 and 1926,0521.15.1-50 for two further editions of this series and see 1947,0319.6.0 for a further overall comment on Piale's series.
The title-page is undated, however the inscription on the title-plate states 'April 6th 1818' providing a terminus ante-quem. The latest date lettered on any of the plates themselves in 1816 (see 1915.1211.2.34), and hence this edition must have been published between 1816 and 1818. A number of the plates were executed in the preceding decades such as those by Domencio Pronti (dated 1779/1780) and Francesco Morelli (dated 1775, see 1915.1211.2.33).
In addition to the views of Rome common to the other editions of this publication, this volume has two maps inserted before the title-page and a number of architectural studies of monuments in Rome inserted throughout the series. At the back of the volume, there are 10 plates each with 15 cameos depicting statues, medals and items housed in musuems, palaces and churches in Rome. These plates appear to have been originally produced for their inclusion in another publication as indicated by the page references from I-X in the upper right corner of each plate (see 1915.1211.2.46-55).
