- Curator's comments
- This is a copy of a watercolour by John Robert Cozens in the Department, 1900-4-11-25. It was produced at the evening 'Academy' held in the house of Dr Thomas Monro in the Adelphi on the Strand. According to the testimony of Joseph Farington, Girtin drew the outlines and Turner washed in the effects. Many of the so-called 'Monro School' copies are attributed to both artists; occasionally, though, the hand of Girtin can be discerned as the painter of the wash as well. In this case, the copy should probably be attributed to both artists.
