- Curator's comments
- This was a new discovery when acquired in 1914, and was long believed to be the unique impression until another one was found in the Macclesfield Library and was acquired by the Folger Library in Washington c.2010. According to Pennington, there are no features in the print which would give a precise date; but the walks with railings which were laid out just before the Restoration are not shown. Hollar might be depicting the square either as planned by William Newton c.1641 or by Arthur Newman c.1653. See R. Godfrey, 'Wenceslaus Hollar: A Bohemian Artist in England', New Haven and London, 1994, no. 101.
