A comely young woman stands between a burly sailor (right) with a cudgel, who has just entered the room, and a miserable shambling tailor, in ragged clothes, who trembles at the sight of the sailor. She smiles, holding the tailor by the chin, and putting a restraining hand on the sailor's arm. A boy (left) in the background watches the encounter. 1 November 1808
