- Curator's comments
- This book of prints seens to be an incomplete collection of the plates and woodcuts used in the 'Histoires et Aventures', with the woodcuts printed on the page in no particular order, sometimes various on one sheet. 22 of the etchings are whole-page illustrations, while the other etchings are about half a page, each plate printed on a different sheet. There are 52 plates, each plate printed in 2 states, making 104 images/etchings.
Pen and ink note on last pages of the book read: "No 6 Eaux-fortes / Etchings by Alexandre Lunois to illustrate Hans Andersen's 'Recits et Aventures' 1910 / No 6 of 10 sets", and "No 6 Bois / Woodcuts designs by Alexandere Lunois cut by Melle Suzanne Lepere / Illustration to 'Recits et Aventures' by Hans Andersen 1910 / No 6 of 10 sets". This title and date is also on the spine of the book (the book was bound in the BM bindery).
The title 'Recits et Aventures' appears in Edouard Andre's catalogue 'Alexandre Lunois; peintre, graveur et lithographe' (see page 44); this appears to be the title given by Andre to Andersen's work, but Lunois published his edition in 1909 under the title 'Histoires et Aventures' (see page 237) containing 60 etchings and 100 woodcuts.
