- The painting was exhibited at the British Institution in 1857 (no.458), with the following quote: 'Molière, says Boileau, used to read La Forét, his housekeeper, his comedies and farces, and when he preceived that certain laughable situations did not excite her hilarity, he altered or erased them, having remarked that such passages never had any success'.
