LITERATURE: B. Nichols, Burlington, xxv, 1914, p. 164; A. Schmitt, Hanns Lautensack, Nuremberg, 1937, p. 108, no. 109
This drawing, which, according to A. Schmitt, Winzinger regarded as by Hanns Lautensack (c. 1520-1564/5), a view which she found unacceptable, may be linked with a follower of Wolf Huber (q.v.), the Monogrammist HWG (active c. 1530-40). Certainly the draughtsman responsible for it was from the same region and has responded similarly to the same influences. While one cannot say with a great degree of certainty that it is from the same hand as the designer of the Monogrammist's three landscape woodcuts (Thieme-Becker, xxxviii, p. 414, col. 1), his landscapes are the work closest to the present drawing known to me.
