- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. "Sunday Magazine"; "Good Words"; etc; for the years 1871-1874. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XXIX. Sunday Magazine. Good Words. Good Words for the Young. Wilfred Cumbermede. 1871-74.'. The album includes approximately 1317 wood-engraved proofs made for periodicals. While most of the wood-engravings are made after drawn designs, there are also many after photographs. The album also includes some images that were apparently unused.
Contents include:
Nos. 1-108: illustrations after various artists for ‘The Sunday Magazine’, 1st March 1871 – 1st December 1871. Writings illustrated include: ‘Your Life and Mine’, ‘Tares and Wheat’, ‘The Story of the Mine’, ‘A Tea-Party in a Workhouse’, ‘Margaret’, ‘The Vicar’s Daughter’ and others. Illustrations include many narrative images, portraits (including ecclesiastical portraits), pictorial capitals, and topography.
Nos 109-116: title and illustrations after Townley Green for ‘The Star in the East’. Publication not yet traced: this could be an independent book, but is very likely the Christmas number for ‘The Sunday Magazine’ 1871.
Nos. 117-215: illustrations after various artists for ‘The Sunday Magazine’, 1st January 1872 – 1st December 1872. Writings illustrated include: ‘Margaret’, ‘The Vicar’s Daughter’, ‘Charity in London’, ‘Two Scenes from the Hussite Wars’, ‘The Sculptor’ and others. Illustrations include many narrative images, portraits (including ecclesiastical portraits), pictorial capitals, and topography.
Nos. 216-220: illustrations after various artists for ‘One New Year’s Night’ (manuscript title); annotations suggest this was probably the Christmas number for ‘The Sunday Magazine’, 1872.
Nos. 221-247: tiles and illustrations after various artists for ‘The Sunday Magazine’, 1st January 1873 – December 1873. This includes illustrations for the Christmas number for 1873, ‘Paths of Peace’, and a colour-printed wrapper for that number (as well as a partial monochrome impression of the same wrapper). Illustrations include narrative images, portraits, pictorial capitals, and topography.
Nos. 248-299: miscellaneous illustrations, including narrative, decorative and landscape images. The first page of these is headed ‘Strahan Deferred A/C’ in Dalziel’s hand. Alexander Strahan was the publisher of ‘The Sunday Magazine’, ‘Good Words’ and ‘Good Words for the Young’.
Nos. 300-626: various illustrations for ‘Good Words’, 1st March 1871 – October 1873. Writings illustrated include ‘The Sylvesters’, ‘Queer Jean’, ‘The High Mills’, ‘Science and Religion (essay on Sir John Herschel, with a portrait after Julia Margaret Cameron), ‘A Semi-Dutch Town’, ‘The Prescotts of Pamphillion’, ‘Winter in the Rocky Mountains’, ‘Our Ancestors’, and others. Illustrations include many narrative images, portraits, topographical illustrations and pictorial capitals. Please note that Antony Trollope’s ‘The Golden Lion of Granpere’ and Margaret Oliphant’s ‘At His Gates’ both included illustrations engraved by Dalziel, and were serialised in ‘Good Words’ in 1873. However, these seem to be missing from this volume; they may be included in another volume. This series also includes Christmas specials, as follows:
Nos. 432-438 illustrations after William Small for ‘Good Cheer’ (the Christmas number of ‘Good Words’; presumably these are for the 1871 number).
Nos. 569-571: illustrations after Francis Walker and Thomas Sulman for ‘Good Cheer’ (the Christmas number of ‘Good Words’; presumably these are for the 1872 number).
Nos. 627-751: illustrations and part cover after various artists for ‘Good Words for the Young’, 1st March 1871 – 1st November 1871. Writings illustrated include ‘The Merry Cobbler of Baghdad’, ‘Night in the Tropics’, ‘Hoity Hoity in the Village’, ‘On the High Meadows’, George MacDonald’s ‘The Princess and the Goblin’ and many others. N.B. no. 681 is inscribed ‘Good Words’ and seems to be pasted in out of sequence.
No. 752: advertisement for ‘Parkins & Gotto Indoor Amusements’. Likely to be an advertisement included in a monthly issue of ‘Good Words for the Young’ or another magazine represented in this volume.
No. 753: advertisement for ‘Wm. Polson and Cos. Corn Flour’. Likely to be an advertisement included in a monthly issue of ‘Good Words for the Young’ or another magazine represented in this volume.
No. 754: advertisement for ‘Wotherspoon’s Pure Sweets’. Likely to be an advertisement included in a monthly issue of ‘Good Words for the Young’ or another magazine represented in this volume.
Nos. 755-771: illustrations from issues of ‘Good Words for the Young’, and illustrating various stories by Jean Ingelow. This series also includes a separate printed title (no. 755), suggesting that these stories by Ingelow were additionally published or intended to be published in a separate illustrated edition, currently untraced.
Nos. 772-873: illustrations after various artists for ‘Good Words for the Young’, 1st December 1871 – 1st October 1872. Writings illustrated include ‘The Travelling Menagerie’, ‘The Deserted Ship’, ‘Innocents’ Island’, ‘The Carrier Pigeon’, George Macdonald’s ‘Gutta Percha Willie’, Anne Jane Cupples’s ‘The Mountain School Farm’ and many others. This series also includes adverts as follows:
No. 777: advertisement for ‘Mrs. T. G. Young Ladies Outfitting and Baby Linen Warehouses’. Likely to be an advertisement included in a monthly issue of ‘Good Words for the Young’ or another magazine represented in this volume.
No. 795: advertisement for ‘Glenfield Starch’. Likely to be an advertisement included in a monthly issue of ‘Good Words for the Young’ or another magazine represented in this volume.
Nos. 874-1270: titles and miscellaneous illustrations, all apparently associated with the magazine ‘Good Things for the Young’, November 1872 – January 1875, or with the publisher Strahan and Co. ‘Good Things’ took over from ‘Good Words for the Young’ late in 1872). Nos. 1269 and 1270 are magazine covers printed monochrome and colour-printed. The series includes two Christmas specials:
Nos. 902-914: illustrations after various artists, particularly Arthur Hughes, for ‘London Mixture’, the Christmas number of ‘Good Things’, 1872.
Nos. 1108-1133: illustrations after Ernest Griset for ‘The Good Natured Bear’, apparently for the Christmas number of ‘Good Things’, 1873.
Nos. 1271-1317: titles and illustrations apparently all associated with ‘St. Pauls Magazine’ and ‘The Contemporary Review’, published by Strahan and his temporary distributor Henry S. King. This series includes illustrations for George Macdonald’s serial novel ‘Wilfred Cumbermede’, magazine titles, publishers’ logos and comic illustrations.

This is one in a series of 49 albums in the British Museum with proof impressions of wood-engravings by the Brothers Dalziel.
An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more writers, titles and artists on inspection and with further research.
In many cases, designers have been listed for the wood-engravings. Where no attribution comments are given, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. through publication details, etc.). Further, some indication has also been given throughout when a designer's work is signed with signature or monogram. After the producer's name and the print number or range, the letter 's' in parentheses indicates a signature, the letter 'm' a monogram, and neither letter indicates a print that is unsigned by the draughtsman or draughtswoman. In addition, most of the proofs have the Dalziels' signature, although some do not. The presence/absence of the Dalziel signature has not been catalogued, since it is known that all these prints are by them.
The album includes some hand-written annotation, including brief notes written at the Dalziel office, and some designers and publication details added more recently by Robin de Beaumont.
