- Title
- Object: India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel
- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. General Work - Various. 1866. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XXI. Various Works. 1866'. The album includes approximately 1288 wood-engraved proofs. Following the title-page there is a contents page written by the Dalziels. This is useful though by no means comprehensive; it mostly refers to publishers, as well as writers and periodical and book titles, and examination of the album suggests it is not always reliable. Most of the proofs have the Dalziels' signature, although some don't, particularly the diagrams, decoration, lettering and simpler commercial images.
The album includes numerous book and periodical illustrations of all sorts. There are a large number of illustrations for fiction and poetry, and also many images aimed at children (both for entertainment and education). There are religious and historical images, and imperialist, orientalising illustrations. There are natural history illustrations, and some portraying landscape, topography and architecture. The album includes decorative borders and designs, pictorial initials and lettering, and various comic or groteque images. A large number of wood engravings for periodicals are included, for titles such as: 'The Quiver', 'London Society', 'Good Words, 'The Sunday Magazine', 'The Argosy' and 'Routledge's Magazine for Boys'.
Individual prints include the following:
Nos. 1-2, 16-39: architectural diagrams after John Taylor. See also his work in the previous Dalziel album (reg. no. 1913,0415.181).
Nos. 186-193: illustrations for [Alain René Lesage], 'The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane', translated by Tobias Smollett (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1866).
Nos. 194-205: illustrations after W. Jones and Arthur Boyd Houghton for two novels by Elizabeth Eiloart: 'Johnny Jordan and his Dog' (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867) and 'Ernie at School: and What Came of his Going There' (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867).
Nos. 218-233: illustrations after John Gilbert to Longfellow's 'Poetical Works... Complete Edition' (London: Routledge, 1867). These are new illustrations for the new edition. Most of the other illustrations in this publication would have been carried over from earlier editions. For impressions of these, and more generally for earlier illustrations of Longfellow by Dalziel and Gilbert, see also reg. nos. 1913,0415.174, 1913,0415.164, 1913,0415.169, 1913,0415.173 and 1905,1019.215-316.
Nos. 250-258: covers and spines for the publishers Chapman & Hall, for the 'People's edition' of several works of fiction by Dickens: 'The Old Curiosity Shop', 'David Copperfield', 'Sketches by Boz', 'Martin Chuzzlewit' and 'A Tale of Two Cities'. For other covers and spines in this series, see 1913,0415.181.
Nos. 261-268, 313-365: illustrations after various artists, for several works by Catherine D. Bell, all published by Frederick Warne.
Nos. 269-312: illustrations and some wrappers for toy books published by Frederick Warne. Many, perhaps all, are after designs by Alfred W. Bayes. Surviving copies are scarce, but advertisements suggest they were printed in colours and sometimes mounted on linen. Titles represented here include 'Jack in the Box', 'The Object Alphabet', 'Edith's Alphabet', 'The Babes in the Wood' and 'The Sunday A.B.C.'.
Nos. 447-458: illustrations after various artists for Longfellow, 'Poetical Works' (London: Frederick Warne, 1867). In the Chandos Poets series.
Nos. 605-733: miscellaneous illustrations (perhaps for a single publication?) including many crafts-related images, such as patterns for making a doll and doll's clothes, and diagrams of wax flowers, modelling in leather, and several textile-related arts.
Nos. 867-878: illustrations after Arthur Hughes for George MacDonald, 'Dealings with the Fairies' (London: Alexander Strahan, 1867).
Nos. 894-905: illustrations after Hablot K. Browne for [James Greenwood], 'The True History of a Little Ragamuffin', published in London by Frederick Warne or S. O. Beeton in 1866. For more information and other illustrations to this book, see reg. no. 1913,0415.181. It appears that the publication changed hands with regard to publisher, designer and wood engraver.
Nos. 956-1027: illustrations after Alfred W. Bayes for Hans Christian Andersen, 'Stories for the Household', translated by H. W. Dulcken (London: Routledge, 1866). For other proofs for this book, see also reg. no. 1913,0415.181.
Nos. 1244-1274: illustrations after Andrew Reid for Ralph Nicholson Wornum, 'Some Account of the Life and Works of Hans Holbein, Painter, of Augsburg' (London: Chapman and Hall, 1867). In many cases Reid is here acting as intermediary draughtsman after Holbein.

- Curator's comments
- Catalogued by Bethan Stevens (University of Sussex) in partnership with the British Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); digital photography by Sylph Editions, London (www.sylpheditions.com).
At the front of the volume is a handwritten list of artists linked to several of the prints. The handwriting has been identified as Arthur Aspitall's, after comparison with the bound volume 'Specimens of Handwriting', held in the British Museum Print Room. Where no comments are given after the names of producers, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. signed print, publication details, etc.). An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more publications and artists on inspection and with further research.
