- Object: India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel
- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. General Work - Various. 1864. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XIX. Various Works. 1864'. The album includes approximately 958 wood-engraved proofs. Following the title-page there is a contents page written by the Dalziels. This is useful though by no means comprehensive; it refers to publishers, writers, periodicals or book titles.
The album includes numerous book and periodical illustrations of all sorts. There are a large number of narrative illustrations, including to a wide range of fiction and poetry. There are topographical, religious and historical images, and imperialist, orientalising illustrations. The album includes many decorative or pictorial initials and lettering, some comic and riddle pictures, and some fine art reproductions. There are a few natural history illustrations, and some aeronautical images (e.g. of hot air balloons). A large number of periodical illustrations are included, for titles such as: 'London Society', 'Harper's New Monthly Magazine', 'The Life Boat, or Journal of the National Life-Boat Institution', 'The Churchman's Family Magazine', 'The Cornhill Magazine', 'Good Words', 'The Sunday Magazine', 'Pleasant Hours', and 'Every Boy's Annual'.
Individual prints include the following:
No. 7: card for the 'Shakespeare Tercentenary', after George Cruikshank. Probably the Workman's Memorial subscription card. There is space for text in the centre.
Nos 128-9: portrait of Rev. Samuel Wilberforce, for 'The Churchman's Family Magazine' (June 1864). No. 128 is the first state, in which he wears a top hat; no. 129 is a new head for insertion in the block, this time without the hat.
Nos. 142-4: illustrations after John Everett Millais for Anthony Trollope, 'The Small House at Allington', as serialised in 'The Cornhill Magazine' from September 1862 to April 1864. This album includes the final lot of the illustrations, published from February to April 1864. There is one full-page illustration and two vignettes with illustrated initial letters. The novel was also published in book form in 1864 by Smith, Elder & Co. The book publication included the full-page illustrations made for 'The Cornhill Magazine', but not the vignettes. Unusually for Millais's designs, some of the vignettes lack his monogram, but are still all assumed to be his. For other illustrations to the novel, see reg. nos. 1913,0415.176 and 1913,0415.178.
Nos. 165-176: these appear all to be book illustrations and illustrated title-pages for the Dublin publisher James Duffy.
Nos. 178-204: these include several images of ancient art and monuments, including a representation of an Assyrian or neo-Assyrian lamassu (no. 194). A pencil inscription in Dalziel's hand 'A & C Black', above no. 177, suggest these wood-engravings were for a book or books produced by that publisher.
No. 236: portrait after Thomas D. Scott of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Nos. 272, 288-90: illustrated wrappers or covers for various children's books published by Ward & Lock.
Nos. 273-287: head and shoulder portraits of numerous historic women.
Nos. 302-9: illustrations after John D. Watson for Henry Southgate, 'What Men Have Said about Woman' (London: Routledge, Warne, & Routledge, 1865).
Nos. 322-7: children's illustrations and lettering, including pencil notes in Dalziel's hand about colour printing, and an illustrated wrapper or cover (no. 322) for 'Routledge's Picture Scraps' (London: Routledge, Warne & Routledge, [n.d.]), with partial hand colouring.
Nos. 340-48: illustrations after John Gilbert for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 'Tales of a Wayside Inn' (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1866). There may have been a London edition published in 1864 or 1865, perhaps by Routledge, but this has not yet been identified.
Nos. 352-3: illustrated half-titles after Alfred W. Bayes for John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress', part 1 and part 2. Edition not identified.
Nos. 363-73: illustrated wrapper and illustrations after Marcus Stone for Charles Dickens's 'Our Mutual Friend' (London: Chapman and Hall, 1864-5). This novel was published in parts between May 1864 and November 1865, and was then issued in book form in 1865. The illustrated wrapper included in this volume is for the monthly installments only; it is on white paper for this proof, and printed without the letterpress inserts; the published version was printed on blue paper. The illustrations included here are for the installments published from May 1864 to January 1865. For the remainder of the illustrations, see the next album in the Dalziel Archive (reg. no. 1913,0415.181). Dalziel engraved half of the illustrations to 'Our Mutual Friend'; in most cases, they were responsible for one of the two images in each monthly installment. The other images were engraved by W. T. Green (these are not, of course, in the Dalziel Archive).
Nos. 458-562: numerous illustrations demonstrating fitness exercises with dumb bells, pulleys, rings etc.
Nos. 563-9: illustrations after John W. North for Jean Ingelow, 'Songs of Seven' (Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1866). There is an annotation in Dalziel's hand beside no. 563, recording that 'Proofs went to America June 11th 1864'. The images proofed here represent all the full-page illustrations for 'Songs of Seven'. However, the published book additionally includes other images and vignettes on a smaller scale, not by the Dalziels (these may presumably have been made by local illustrators?). For a copy of the published book, see reg. no. 1992,0406.139.
Nos. 590-5: illustrations after Miss E. Taylor for Anthony Trollope, 'Can you Forgive Her?' (London: Chapman & Hall, 1864-5). The novel was published in monthly installments, the first of which were illustrated by Phiz (Hablot K Browne). However, E. Taylor and the Dalziel Brothers took over the commission for the last ten numbers, equating to the second volume in the book version; Trollope had been unhappy with Phiz's illustrations. These proofs are the first of the illustrations designed by Taylor; the majority are in the next volume of the Dalziel Archive (reg. no. 1913,0415.181).
Nos. 624-64: illustrated wrapper or cover, and illustrations after various designers, for 'The Beautiful Picture Book' (London: Routledge, Warne & Routledge, [n.d.]).
Nos. 843-922: illustrations after Alfred W. Bayes for 'Golden Light: Being Scripture Histories for the Young' (London: Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1865). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press.
Nos. 923-958: illustrations after Arthur Boyd Houghton for 'Home Thoughts and Home Scenes' (London: Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1865). Dalziel Gift Book for 1865; printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. For copies of the published book, see reg. nos. 1992,0406.127 and 1996,1104.20.

- Curator's comments
- Catalogued by Bethan Stevens (University of Sussex) in partnership with the British Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); digital photography by Sylph Editions, London (www.sylpheditions.com).
At the front of the volume is a handwritten list of artists linked to several of the prints. The handwriting has been identified as Arthur Aspitall's, after comparison with the bound volume 'Specimens of Handwriting', held in the British Museum Print Room. Where no comments are given after the names of producers, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. signed print, publication details, etc.). An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more publications and artists on inspection and with further research.
