- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. "Arabian Nights". "Goldsmith". "Round of Days". "Spirit of Praise". "Jean Ingelow". "Wayside Posies". "Ballad Stories". "Golden Thoughts". "North Coast". 1863 & onward. This Book was made up at the time the Engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads: 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XVIII. Goldsmith's Works. A Round of Days. The Spirit of Praise. Jean Ingelow. Wayside Posies. Ballad Stories. Golden Thoughts. The North Coast. 1863-7'. The album includes approximately 898 wood-engraved proofs, for some of the most lavish illustrated gift books produced by the Dalziels' Camden Press in the mid-1860s. Many of the proofs have been touched in white or pencil to indicate corrections to be made. Many have partial pencil annotations for corrections in the margins, although these have been trimmed off before the images were pasted in the album.
N.B. This album begins at proof number 252, and folio number 57. Nos. 1-251, or the first 56 leaves, were the proofs for the 'Dalziels' Illustrated Arabian Nights' Entertainments'. These are not present; the pages were removed from the album, presumably at the time the Dalziel albums were bound (or re-bound) by the British Museum; they are now integrated in the prints and drawings collection. They can be located from their registration numbers (reg. nos. 1913,0415.1-251). An annotation to this effect has also been added to the album's title-page.
The album's contents are as follows:
Nos. 252-354: illustrations for 'Dalziels' Illustrated Goldsmith', two volumes (London & New York: Ward, Lock & Co., 1865). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. Of these, nos. 252-3 appear to be an illustrated wrapper and a partial title (the latter perhaps to be included on the wrapper in a different colour). Nos. 254 and 256-354 are illustrations after George Pinwell to Oliver Goldsmith's works. No. 255 is a reproduction of Goldsmith's signature. For a copy of the published book, see reg. nos. 1992,0406.114-5.
Nos. 355-426: illustrations for 'A Round of Days: Described in Original Poems by Some of Our Most Celebrated Poets, and in Pictures by Eminent Artists: Engraved by the Brothers Dalziel' (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1866). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. This book was conceived as a word-image collaboration. The advertisement states that 'in some cases, the Artist has illustrated the Author's Poem; in others, the Authors have shown themselves willing to portray in words the ideas coveyed in the Artists' original designs'. The draughtsmen involved were W. P. Burton, A. W. Bayes, Warwick Brooks, E. Dalziel, T. Dalziel, Paul Gray, A. B. Houghton, T. Morten, J. W. North, G. J. Pinwell, F. Walker and J. D Watson. The writers involved were William Allingham, Robert Buchanan, H. W. Dulcken, Amelia Edwards, Dora Greenwell, Tom Hood, William Howitt, Mary Howitt, Jennett Humphreys, Jean Ingelow, Frederick Licker, George MacDonald, Caroline Norton, Christina Rossetti and Tom Taylor. The proofs for this publication are preceded in the album by a blank page annotated in pencil in Dalziel's hand, 'A Round of Days / finished Sept 25 / 65'. No. 425 is a decorative labell reading 'Dalziels' Gift Book 1866'. For two copies of the published book, including Edward Dalziel's own copy with ALS from F. Walker and C. Rossetti, see reg. nos. 1992,0406.346 and 1996,1104.41.
Nos. 427-754: illustrations for 'The Spirit of Praise: A Collection of Hymns Old and New' (London: F. Warne & Co., 1867). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. The illustrations are designed by A. W. Bayes, J. Burlison, E. Dalziel, T. Dalziel, P. Gray, A. B. Houghton, P. Hundley, J. W. North, G. J. Pinwell, F. Smallfield and W. Small. This gift book included a significant amount of colour printing, so some of the designs are made from several blocks. In the book publication these were printed together on the same page, the separate blocks contributing a different colour to the final illustration. Here in the album, these blocks are proofed separately and all in black. Thus nos. 730 and 732 are proofs of two blocks for the frontispiece (the brown and red portions), after J. Burlison. Some blocks for the frontispiece seem to be missing from the album: for instance those printed in blue in the final publication. Similiarly, nos. 745, 746 and 748 are proofs of three blocks for the title-page (the red, blue and brown portions), also after Burlison. Similarly, there are numerous decorative initials and borders after P. Hundley which were designed to be colour-printed in red and black, and so there are two proofs per image, pasted in side by side. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.364.
Nos. 755-852: illustrations for Jean Ingelow, 'Poems' (London: Longmans, Green, Reader & Dyer, 1867). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. The illustrations are designed by E. Dalziel, T. Dalziel, A. B. Houghton, J. W. North, G. J. Pinwell, E. J. Poynter, W. Small and J. Wolf. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.137, or for an edition simultaneously published in Boston, see reg. no. 1996,1104.22.
Nos. 853-894: illustrations for Robert Buchanan (ed.), 'Wayside Posies: Original Poems of the Country Life' (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. The illustrations are designed by G. J. Pinwell, J. W. North and F. Walker. Dalziels' Fine Art Gift Book 1867. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.395.
Nos. 895-929: illustrations for Robert Buchanan, 'Ballad Stories of the Affections. From the Scandinavian' (London: George Routledge and Sons, [1866]). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. The illustrations are designed by G. J. Pinwell, W. Small, A. B. Houghton, E. Dalziel, T. Dalziel, J. Lawson & J. D. Watson. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992.0406.34. Nos 895-928 are proofs of the illustrations to the book. The final proof gathered here, no. 929, is two sheets, pasted together, of six small decorative tailpieces, with abstract vegetatitve designs, in a horizontal format. Three of these only were used in the 'Ballad Stories', and the book also has numerous other decorative head- and tailpieces that aren't included here. Presumably, Dalziel designed and set the book using any of the decorations available in their workshop; these six may have been newly produced at this time to add to such stock. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.34.
Nos. 930-1096: illustrations for 'Golden Thoughts from Golden Fountains' (London: Frederick Warne and Company, [1867]). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. The illustrations are designed by A. B. Houghton, E. Dalziel, T. Dalziel, J. Lawson, J. Wolf, W. P. Burton, W. Small, J. D. Watson, G. Dalziel, C. Simms, G. J. Pinwell and J. W. North. Nos. 1088-9 are two blocks for the title-page, which in the final publication was colour-printed in brown and gilt. Some of the illustrations are printed in the book with a gilt border. While the border hasn't been proofed, one of these, no. 1096, has a decorative border marked up in pencil on the proof. For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.113.
Nos. 1097-1149: illustrations for Robert Buchanan, 'North Coast and other Poems' (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1868). Printed by Dalziel at the Camden Press. No. 1110 is significantly shorter than the published illustration; a section was added at the bottom after proofing (this addition is indicated in pencil on the margin of the proof). For a copy of the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.35, a presentation copy from the Dalziel Brothers to their nephew Gordon, with two ALS from Robert Buchanan.
