- Title
- Object: India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel
- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. General Work - Various. 1863. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XVII. Various Works. 1863'. The album includes approximately 1456 wood-engraved proofs. Following the title-page there is a contents page written by the Dalziels. This is useful though by no means comprehensive; it refers to some publishers, writers, periodicals or book titles.
The album includes numerous book illustrations of all sorts. There are a large number of narrative images for books and periodicals (including 'London Society', 'Every Boy's Magazine', 'Good Words', 'The Cornhill Magazine' and 'The Churchman'). There are several imperialist and orientalist images. There are children's illustrations, religious images, natural history illustrations and decorative or technical designs. The album includes landscapes and topographical images, and there are some maps. There is lettering of various sorts, and many elementary line images apparently intended for a book of instruction in drawing (nos. 1158-1304).
Individual prints include the following:
No. 20: a large-scale design after H. S. Barton, showing an exhibition of Chubb locks and safes, many of them decorative. Presumably an advertisement?
Nos. 85-6: two parts of a souvenir commemorating the marriage of the Prince of Wales. Albert Edward (later Edward VII) married Alexandra of Denmark in 1863.
Nos. 149-204: wood engravings after John Everett Millais for 'The Parables of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ' (London: Routledge, 1864). This book was one of the landmarks of Victorian art books. This series includes the proofs of designs after Millais, and also decorative borders and initials (the latter printed in red). For the published version of the book, see reg. no. 1992,0406.244.
No. 269: a wood engraving after a painting by Ferdinand Heilbuth, 'Tasso at Ferrara', published in the periodical 'London Society' (August 1864).
No. 342: illustrated wrapper or title-page for 'The Child's Picture Scrap Book with Upwards of Four Hundred Illustrations' (London and New York: Routledge, [n.d.]). Under the print, an annotation in ink in Dalziel's hand reads '1 Feature & 3 Colour Blocks'.
Nos. 419-29: illustrated wrappers and one spine for various cheap publications for Ward & Lock. Most are for children, and one (no. 423) has some hand colouring.
Nos. 517-32: illustrations after Joseph Noel Paton for William E Aytoun, 'Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems' (Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1863). The book was illustrated by Joseph Noel Paton and also by his brother Waller H. Paton, engraved by various wood engravers including Dalziel. These are 16 of the 35 wood engravings that Dalziel contributed. The publication does not indicate which illustration was designed by which of the Paton brothers, and only some are signed, but the attribution to Joseph here is in line with both artists' specialisms. For the remaining illustrations to this publication, see 1913,0415.176.
Nos. 559-611: illustrations after Thomas Dalziel, John D. Watson and Joseph Wolf, for H. W. Dulcken, 'The Golden Harp; Hymns, Rhymes and Songs for the Young' (London: Routledge, 1864). For the published book, with a dedication to 'Amy Dalziel with kindest love from Papa', see reg. no. 1992,0406.94.
Nos. 612-715: illustrations after Thomas Dalziel for John Bunyan, 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (London: Ward, Lock & Tyler, [1863]). For the published book see reg. no. 1992,0406.42, which is in fact an undated, enlarged edition of th 1863 publication. For later illustrations after Thomas Dalziel for 'The Pilgrim's Progress', see reg. nos. 1913,0415.181 and 1913,0415.182.
Nos. 716-39: illustrations after John Everett Millais for Anthony Trollope, 'The Small House at Allington', as serialised in 'The Cornhill Magazine' from September 1862 to April 1864. This album includes the second lot of the illustrations, published from February 1863 to January 1864. Each full-page illustration is accompanied by a vignette with an illustrated initial letter. The novel was eventually published in book form in 1864 by Smith, Elder & Co. The book publication included the full-page illustrations made for 'The Cornhill Magazine', but not the vignettes. Unusually for Millais's designs, some of these designs lack his monogram. For other illustrations to the novel, see reg. nos. 1913,0415.176 and 1913,0415.180.
Nos. 859-959: portrait frontispiece and 100 illustrations after John D. Watson for Daniel Defoe, 'The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' (London & New York: Routledge, 1864).
Nos. 962-9: illustrations after Marcus Stone for Charles Dickens, 'Great Expectations' (London: Chapman & Hall, 1864). This was the first illustrated edition.
Nos. 970-73: illustrations after Marcus Stone for Charles Dickens, 'A Child's History of England' (London: Chapman & Hall, [1863-4?]).
Nos. 1033-73: illustrations after George Cruikshank, John Leech and John Tenniel, for Thomas Ingoldsby [Richard Barham], 'The Ingoldsby Legends: Or Mirth and Marvels' (London: Richard Bentley, 1864). For the published book, with a fine decorative binding, see reg. no. 1992,0406.19.
Nos. 1074-1157: illustrations after Alfred Walter Bayes for Hans Christian Andersen, 'Stories and Tales', translated by H. W. Dulcken (London: Routledge, 1864).

- Curator's comments
- Catalogued by Bethan Stevens (University of Sussex) in partnership with the British Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); digital photography by Sylph Editions, London (www.sylpheditions.com).
At the front of the volume is a handwritten list of artists linked to several of the prints. The handwriting has been identified as Arthur Aspitall's, after comparison with the bound volume 'Specimens of Handwriting', held in the British Museum Print Room. Where no comments are given after the names of producers, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. signed print, publication details, etc.). An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more publications and artists on inspection and with further research.
