- Object: India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel
- Description
-
Album with hand-written title-page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. General Work - Various. 1860. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XIII. Various Works. 1860'. The album includes approximately 1673 wood-engraved proofs.
The album includes numerous book illustrations of all sorts. It includes children's illustrations, geometrical and mechanical diagrams, marine, hunting and topographical illustrations, biblical scenes, illustrations to imperialist and travel narratives, novels, poetry, botany and astronomy. In this album, there are several covers and spines for cheap editions of novels, particularly novels by Walter Scott, published for eighteen pence by A & C Black (see nos. 1-4, 57-60, 592-5, 792-3, 821-2); there are also similarly formatted title pages and spines for other writers and publishers. Many of the proofs are touched with white. Some of the impressions are also annotated on the designs or margins; these annotations are usually proofing corrections, but most have been partially trimmed off before the illustrations were pasted in.
Individual prints include the following:
Nos. 79-86: illustrations for F. C. Armstrong, 'The Lion of War; or, the Pirates of Loo Chow: a tale of the Chinese seas, for youths' (London: James Blackwood, [1860]).
No. 90: large hunting scene (240 x 348 mm) by Dalziel after Harrison Weir. Joins are showing where the woodblocks have been bolted together to make the larger print.
Nos. 138-165: illustrations for 'Hardships made easy. Domestic hardships. Hardships in travel. Hardships abroad.' (London: James Blackwood, [1861?]). Nos. 166-202 are apparently associated with this publication, but it is not clear whether they were used.
Nos. 212-4: illustrations after John Everett Millais and William Homan Hunt for the periodical 'Once a Week'.
No. 216: trade card for the goldsmith Ellis Gamble; card is bilingual (English and French).
Nos. 225-231: an orientalising image of smokers, and a number of illustrations of tools and pipes.
No. 232: illustrated title for 'The Northern Journal', with river and cityscape behind the title words.
Nos. 245-250 (251?): illustration after John Gilbert to Longfellow's 'Poetical Works: A New Edition' (London: Routledge, 1860). These are new illustrations for the new edition. Most of the other illustrations in this publication are carried over from earlier editions. For impressions of these, and more generally for earlier illustrations of Longfellow by Dalziel and Gilbert, see also reg. nos. 1913,0415.164, 1913,0415.169, 1913,0415.173 and 1905,1019.215-316.
Nos. 252-291: illustrations after John Tenniel to Thomas Moore, 'Lalla Rookh: An Oriental Romance' (London: Longman, Green, Longman & Roberts, 1860). For the rest of the series, see reg. no. 1913,0415.173.+.
Nos. 606 & 817: illustrations after John Everett Millais to Anthony Trollope's 'Framley Parsonage' in 'The Cornhill Magazine'.
Nos. 773-88: illustrations after Harrison Weir of pigs, with plans of a pig sty, trough, etc.
Nos. 1084-6: illustrations after John Leighton and Matthew J. Lawless for Catherine Winkworth (trans.), 'Lyra Germanica: The Christian Life' (London: Longmans, 1868). For a copy of the published book see 1992,0406.402. For illustrations from the 1868 edition, see reg. no. 1913,0415.184.
Nos. 1087-1115: illustrations after Charles Bennett to Henry Morley, 'Oberon's Horn: a Book of Fairy Tales' (London: Chapman & Hall, 1860).
Nos. 1126-1206: illustrations after numerous designers to Eliza Cook’s 'Poems' (London: Routledge, 1861). For analysis of the Dalziel's work on Eliza Cook's poetry, see Lorraine Janzen Kooistra, 'Poetry, Pictures and Popular Publishing' (2011).
Nos. 1250-1360: illustrations after J. D. Watson to John Bunyan, 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (London: Routledge, 1861). An edition in Welsh with the same illustrations was also published in 1861 in Wrexham, by G. R. Hughes & Son.

- Curator's comments
- Catalogued by Bethan Stevens (University of Sussex) in partnership with the British Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); digital photography by Sylph Editions, London (www.sylpheditions.com).
At the front of the volume is a handwritten list of artists linked to several of the prints. The handwriting has been identified as Campbell Dodgson's, after comparison with the bound volume 'Specimens of Handwriting', held in the British Museum Print Room. Where no comments are given after the names of producers, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. signed print, publication details, etc.). An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more publications and artists on inspection and with further research.
