- Object: India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel
- Description
-
Album with hand-written title page: 'India-Proofs of Wood-Engravings by The Brothers Dalziel. General Work - Various. 1858. This Book was made up at the time the engravings shown in it were done.' Half-bound in brown leather and gilt; lettering on spine reads 'Wood-Engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. XI. Various Works. 1858'. The album includes approximately 1682 wood-engraved proofs.
The album includes numerous literary illustrations, especially of poetry. There are also many scientific illustrations, such as images of animal jaws and bones, fish and mammal skeletons, and popular astronomy. There are many illustrations for children's publications, including of fairytales, humour, and informative works about industry. Other subjects include ethnographic portraits, history, religion and travel literature.
Individual prints include the following:
Nos. 21-166: a series titled in manuscript 'Odontology' (publication untraced), with images showing the teeth of numerous different animals.
Nos. 220-587: illustrations to Elisha Noyce, 'The Boys' Book of Industrial Information' (London: Ward & Lock, 1858). The manuscript title given in the album is 'Book of Useful Knowledge'. These wood engravings are described on the title page as 'by the Brothers Dalziel', so were probably designed as well as engraved in the Dalziel workshop.
Nos. 722-803: illustrations to Henry Morley, 'Memoirs of Bartholomew Fair' (London, 1859). This publication includes numerous facsimile illustrations after earlier prints and other works.
Nos. 1502-19: illustrations to James Thomson, 'The Seasons' (London: James Nisbet and Co., 1859).
Nos. 1545-1654: illustrations to 'Poems of William Wordsworth', edited by Robert Aris Willmott (London & New York: Routledge, 1859). Some of these illustrations were simultaneously published in William Wordsworth, 'The Deserted Cottage' (London & New York: Routledge, 1859).
Nos. 1655-1679: illustrations to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 'The Courtship of Miles Standish and Other Poems' (London: Routledge, 1859).

- Curator's comments
- Catalogued by Bethan Stevens (University of Sussex) in partnership with the British Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); digital photography by Sylph Editions, London (www.sylpheditions.com).
At the front of the volume is a handwritten list of artists linked to several of the prints. The handwriting has been identified as Campbell Dodgson's, after comparison with the bound volume 'Specimens of Handwriting', held in the British Museum Print Room. Where no comments are given after the names of producers, evidence is clear and has been verified (e.g. signed print, publication details, etc.). An overview of the album has been offered here, but it would be possible to identify more publications and artists on inspection and with further research.
For the published versions of the illustrations to Wordsworth, see also 1992,0406.421, in the de Beaumont collection. And for the published versions of Thomson's 'The Seasons', see 1992,0406.381, also in the de Beaumont collection.
