- Curator's comments
- This impression comes from a series of India paper proofs before letters in the BM (1913,0212.10 to 69) many of which it seems were later published by Virtue in the Art Journal; it remains to be determined whether this print was re-published in this way. Many of these plates were subsequently reprinted in James' Dafforne "Modern Art: a Series of Line Engravings from the Works of Distinguished Painters of the English and Foreign Schools ... With Descriptive text by J. Dafforne'', London (Virtue & Co); this comprised 120 prints after paintings by contemporary masters issued in two series of 60 plates each (1886). 22 of the series 1913,0212.10 to 69 overlap with prints in the series 1923,1112.121 to 168; these were probably cut out from Dafforne's volume, of which there is no copy in the BM.
