Curator's comments
This is from a series of plates by Metz reproducing drawings by Old Masters and modern artists. The first edition of this set was published in 1789, the second in 1798. The BM holds a complete set, see 1855,0609.812-978; for a bound album of the second edition, see 1936,1105.16.1-139. While many plates were added to the second edition, it also lacks a few plates which were present in the first edition. The prints are all printed on the pages of the book, which is bound in red leather. A gilted inscription lettered on the spine reads "Imitations of drawings by C. M. Metz". The attributions are given as they appear on the plates. They do not necessarily reflect recent scholarship.
