- Summary of J.Rowlands, 'Drawings by German Artists and Artists from German-speaking regions of Europe in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum: the Fifteenth Century, and the Sixteenth Century by Artists born before 1530', London, BM Press, 1993, no. 53:
Despite surface losses, especially of the white bodycolour, sufficient indications remain to make a fair judgement of this drawing. While some parts are well executed, the pen-work lacks the vigour and rhythm associated with authentic drawings by Altdorfer of the period. When it was acquired, Dodgson regarded it as an original, but subsequent authorities have regarded it as a copy after a lost drawing. Another copy of the same subject, also dated 1513 but of lesser quality, is at Karlsruhe (Becker, p. 145, no. 144; Winzinger, ‘Altdorfer’, p. 98, no. 122) and was considered by Oettinger to be in the same hand as the present sheet. This drawing is, however, much closer to Altdorfer in its rendering of detail than any of the other copies.'
