- As a collector, Reynolds took great interest in the works of the masters of famous Italian artists. Reynolds' interest in Guercino, probably started whilst training in the Hudson studio in the early 1740s and seems to have had become a particular favourite. Hudson encouraged Reynolds to respond to Guercino's drawings of children and putti by producing copies in the same medium. The catalogue for 'Sir Joshua Reynolds: The Acquisition of Genius' (Bristol, 2009), makes reference to this drawing and states that it is heavily influenced by Guercino as it bears close resemblence to a sheet Reynolds once owned, now attributed to a Guercino follower. For further information see the above mentioned catalogue, pp. 104-105.
See also Pp,4.43, for further examples of Guercino's Putti.
