- Curator's comments
- The print is one of two in the BM 1911 set (the other is 1911-4-11-169) which do not have the Bertauts blindstamp, unlike the other fourteen prints in that set (1911-4-11.165 to 180). It is assumed that they form part of the same overall 1864 series, and that therefore this print is after Delteil's third state, rather than being the first state. For information on the series, see 1911-4-12-165.
See also 1865-1-14-80, which may also be an impression the 1864 edition, or as in this case, may be the first state, as it too lacks the Bertauts blindstamp.
The National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh (D 4841; Corpus Gernsheim no.18690) has a graphite study for this print, in reverse, of about the same size.
